The compromise in phantom menace was taking a 16 year old character and making him 10 so you could sell toys. It makes his relationship with patome creepy and weird, and it makes the pod racing scene seem like child abuse.

I didn't realize how many digital mistakes were present, but this video actually made me appreciate the video effects even more. Yeah, there were mistakes, but damn... this was a LOT of work, and it came out pretty damned good. Maybe not perfect, but good enough, especially for the time.

Honestly, in spite of the weirder and woolier digressions (Darth Plagueis' ancient master? Huh???) the Trevorrow script/story is pretty excellent to my eyes and ears. Calling it "Duel of the Fates" is a good tie-back to the series' very beginning at its very end, the action scenes sound thrilling, and the lack of Palpatine wouldn't be a big issue IMO. That it was pole-axed into what we actually got by Lucasfilm and Abrams et al. is a real shame.

Decepticons were originally a freedom movement, but once the world of cybertron fell they devolved into conquest.

I like a lot of the video but it's not "objectively" wrong to say the movie looked like a video game. Even if the effects were higher quality it was still painfully obvious that a lot of the movie / characters were some textures stretched too far over an animated mesh. People said it looked like a video game because even if it was higher fidelity than games released at the time, even a completely uninformed viewer could tell it was made from the same technology / techniques. I love the deep dive into the issues with the effects but I disagree so hard with the misuse of the word objective.

I love the fact that the writing in these movies is so utterly and completely BUTCHERED that there’s only one way to have any of it make sense: The Autobots are evil and the Decepticons are almost good 😂 Just to be clear, this is not a criticism of this video. I had a lot of fun watching it, and your ideas and explanations for why things happen the way they did in the movies is genuinely cool! And your ideas do an amazing job of fixing most of, if not all, the plot holes and bizarre ‘creative choices’ in these films. I just find it hilarious that Optimus being evil and Earth being literal hell is the only way to even remotely make sense of and/or fix these movies plots XD

I really enjoy transformers lore as a whole its a fascinating franchise that's beyond the just funny big movie blockbuster with explosions demographic. It's a whole lot more and every instalment of the bay franchise reminds me that Decepticons where never really the bad guys

Can't agree with what constitutes a bad movie. Even with intention and focus a movie can still be bad. Badly written, badly acted, badly executed etc. The Phantom Menace was a bad movie.

From one perspective, the sequel trilogy was doomed from the start because they didn't plan it. But as time has gone on, it feels like it was doomed from the start not because they didn't plan it, but because everything in it was overcalculated. Everything had to be friendly to new fans, but pander to the nostalgia of old ones, and introduce new things while keeping things familiar, and lean into and market these new characters while propping them up with old ones, tell a story about taking down an evil empire without making the Disney execs too uncomfortable, fit the headcanons and darling scenes of a whole committee of writers and producers and three different directors, and most importantly sell toys and other merch of everything. They tried to have and eat six different cakes at the same time, and ended up with a bunch of unfinished cakes and a bellyache.
